Scorpions - Moment of Glory [2000]

This CD is very well done. The band does not overpower the orchestra or vice-versa.

Moment of Glory and Here in My Heart are songs that are about as “beautiful” as a metal band can be. It was wise of the band to include the seemingly underrated “Crossfire.” This instrumental arrangement is spectacular. The only song I was not overly impressed with was “Lady Starlight.” But that doesn’t mean it’s bad.

Anyone who claims that Metal bands are not true artists will eat their words when they hear this. A Scorpions collection is incomplete if it does not include this CD.

Scorpions - Animal Magnetism [1980]

Released in 1980, this is the first album to totally feature Matthias Jabs as the 2nd guitarist. This is a true classic heavymetal album! From the Hipgnosis cover of a woman kneeling in front of a man (who has a beer in one hand and his other hand in his back jeans pocket) you can pretty much guess that this is going to be an album about women kneeling in front of men, but it really is an album of songs in which the guy is made to kneel and grovel for the woman! Ahh, the Scorpions! Here are my ratings of the songs based out of 5 *****:
Make It Real - A guitar rif opening which gives way to a chugging tempo. Some fine bass work from Francis and great guitar exchanges from Mathias and Rudolf. Tempo could almost be considered ballad style and Journey could do no better. A great postive tune about striving for your dreams! Lets hope its still in the live set. Rating - *****

Scorpions - Love at First Sting [1984]

Love At First Sting was the Scorpions’ most successful album in the U.S. and remains their strongest album. Although Savage Amusement would chart higher on the charts and their biggest hit “Wind Of Change” appeared on Crazy World, Love At First Sting was their best album featuring their strongest collection of songs.

This album features an equal balance of heavier tracks, catchy metal driven by memorable riffs, and power ballads, and most of them are top notch. The acoustic turned heavy rocker “Coming Home” is one of the strongest tracks and was the opening song for many of their live shows. “Rock You Like A Hurricane” would be one of their biggest hits and remains their signature song. The ballad “Still Loving You” remains one of the best of the metal era and features some excellent passionate soloing from lead guitarist Matthias Jabs. Tracks like “Big City Nights”, “Bad Boys Running Wild”, and “I’m Leaving You” are all very strong, featuring excellent melodies penned by rhythm guitarist Rudolf Schenker. The lesser known songs are also very good, particularly the anti-war track “Crossfire”, driven by Herman Rarebell’s hypnotic march beat and “As Soon As The Good Times Roll.” An excellent album. Highly recommended to fans of great ’80s melodic metal.

Creed - Human Clay [1999]

Creed burst out of Florida with 1997’s My Own Prison, a dark but commercial debut reminiscent of the early-’90s Seattle sound. Creed’s moody guitar grunge and ardent lyrics, coupled with singer Scott Stapp’s passionate vocals, helped My Own Prison sell millions. Human Clay demonstrates that this likable quartet hasn’t messed with success; they turn in a sophomore outing rife with evocative moodiness, soaring guitars, and a dark, roiling, intense vibe. “Beautiful” is but one of the winners on this strong 11-song CD. Haunting and indeed beautiful, the track is more delicate and seductive than most heard here, as is another lilting and mysterious entry, “Never Die,” which boasts some Middle Eastern accents. “Higher” is typical Creed–safe, emotive guitar rock for the masses, but with a slight edge. Memorable hooks, Soundgarden-like guitars, and Vedder-like vocals make Human Clay at once compelling and effectively redundant.

Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda steps out for a wall-to-wall hip-hop project on which he faces his critics (”High Road”), gets autobiographical (”Remember the Name”), shares family history (”Kenji”) and emerges as a hip-hop reformist (”Cigarette”). Standing shoulder to shoulder with, among others, John Legend, members of The Roots and Styles of Beyond, The Rising Tied shines brightest in its earliest moments, where the beats and rhymes feel and sound freshest and where the positive message feels most sincere. A limited edition includes two documentary footage that follows the album’s evolution, and Shinoda during the making of the video for “Petrified,” all of which ultimately provides fans with interesting insights into the album and the artist himself.

Metallica - Load [1996]

With Load, Metallica takes a dramatic left turn with their music, continuing in the direction suggested by Metallica, their previous album. The songs on Load have groove; they’re slower, with far fewer of the lightning-fast riffs that have been Metallica’s trademark since their inception. While songs like “Ain’t My Bitch” and “Wasting My Hate” are up-tempo and full of the vitriol one would expect from the quintessential heavy metal band, “2 X 4″ is hard rock with a blues beat, “Hero of the Day” sounds positively mainstream, and “Mama Said” is an actual, honest-to-god ballad. While some diehard fans may find this mix unappealing, there’s plenty to like about this album, including its laid-back, rhythmic orientation, and James Hetfield’s characteristic growl tempered by his growing maturity as a vocalist.

Opeth - My Arms, Your Hearse [2003]

This is my favorite Opeth masterpiece. Initially, when Opeth was still new to me, it was my least favorite. It has the dreariest, grittiest production, few acoustic guitar parts (and they are mostly short), and seems even more sonically oppressive and bleak than anything else they’ve done. But this album is AMAZING. It is a concept album about a ghost who seems not to realize that he’s dead and he observes his lost love after his passing. “Karma” seems to be where he becomes aware of his demise and it’s crushing (the scream!!! it’s all about that scream). _My Arms, Your Hearse_ is heavier than _Orchid_ and _Morningrise_ but no less melodic and captivating in its evocative, spellbinding musical progression. From the haunting sounds of rain and ethereal piano notes of “Prologue”, to the tidal wave of melodic riffs in “April Ethereal”, to the longing, forlorn acoustic ending of “When”, to the hellfire assault of “Demon of the Fall”, to the smothering finality of “Karma”, to the soul-melting, aching melodies of “Epilogue”, MAYH is a masterpiece with few peers. No fan of progressive metal should be without this, and anyone who didn’t really “get it” is strongly encouraged to give it another chance.
